Yesterday I went to Club Kali - a club for Asian GLBT which runs on the 3rd Friday of every month. If I have to sum up the experience in a single word, I would just say 'disappointing'. The music was bad, the sound system was pathetic, the decor was cheap and there was no dance floor.
Even before I entered, I had guessed how it was going to be. The entrance was adorned with glitzy curtains in red and dark green glaring at you, most of the guys wore short tank tops and somehow the place was too camp for my taste. It is unbelievable I did not talk to a single soul during my 3 hours of stay over there. I did like a couple of guys, but everyone was in a group, and I felt a bit uncomfortable marching upto them and introducing myself.
But there is one thing I seriously do not understand. Why do gay guys have to be so ridiculously showy and artificial in whatever they do. Why do they have to pretend to be so sissyish inside the club, while most of them behave perfectly normally as soon as they step out? Why does a top have to look out for a cute bottom and a bottom to lure a hunky top? Why can't two tops be together or two bottoms be together? Why has it reduced to being a 'giver' or a 'taker' rather than being about compatibility - mental compatibility, emotional compatibility?
Somehow I felt really awkward being in that club yesterday. I felt I wasn't a part of them, it appeared to be a totally strange world to me. I believe gay guys try hard to adhere to the stereotype of being 'gay' i.e. being camp and promiscuous, and they feel that if they do not live upto the stereotype, they would not get laid and would not be considered a part of the community. I just wish they acted their normal selves, rather than try and strive for something they are not. It is unfortunate, to say the least.
